The Journey of a Master Smith: Chris Cherrington

Chris Cherrington’s journey through the multiverse began in 1978 amidst the volcanic landscapes of Hawaii. From that first roll of the dice, a lifelong obsession with systems, storytelling, and world-building was born. Over nearly five decades, Chris has navigated countless campaigns across nearly every state in the union, mastering a wide array of systems while always returning to his true north.

As a Dungeon Master, Chris’s heart has always belonged to Mystara. Utilizing the foundational BECMI framework, he has spent decades refining the “Known World” into a living, breathing landscape. His philosophy of Skills-Based BECMI isn’t a new invention, but a legacy project; it began with “borrowing” mechanics from Gamma World to add grit to his early games and evolved alongside TSR’s Gazetteer Series.

Today, Chris blends this deep historical knowledge with modern design logic, “tweaking the gears” of the rules to provide more flavor, more agency, and more soul to character development. He believes that a rulebook should be like a chef’s pantry—full of distinct ingredients that, when blended correctly, create a legendary experience for every player at the table.

Whether crafting a masterwork sword in a Glantri forge or a signature crepe in a Panama City kitchen, Chris remains dedicated to the art of the perfect build.
