You did not see it. It was against the rock wall and then it was not against the rock wall and now it is attacking you and you are nauseated. The –2 to attack rolls is going to matter.

What a Troglodyte Is #
A troglodyte is an intelligent humanoid reptile with a short tail, long legs, and a spiny comb on its head and arms. It walks upright and uses its hands as well as a human. It hates most other creatures. It has two primary advantages: chameleon-like color change for ambush, and a nauseating stench.
Average INT 10: The troglodyte is as intelligent as an average human. It has tactics, strategy, and the capacity to plan ambushes deliberately. The color change and stench are not instinctive defenses — they are tools a reasonably intelligent creature knows how to use.

The Chameleon Ability — Complete Mechanics #
“Troglodytes have the chameleonlike ability to change colors, and use it to hide by rock walls, surprising often (1–4 on 1d6).”
Surprise rate: 1–4 on d6 = 67%. The second-highest standard surprise rate in the RC after the shade (90%) and nightwing (90% swoop). A troglodyte group in a cave ambush surprises approximately two-thirds of the time.
Requirement: Must be against a rock wall. The troglodyte’s color change mimics stone — it is effective against rocky/dungeon backgrounds, not in open terrain or against non-stone surfaces.
Active use: With INT 10, troglodytes deliberately pre-position against cave walls before prey arrives. They are not reacting to the party — they have been waiting.
The Stench — Complete Mechanics #
“A troglodyte also secretes an oil that produces a stench, nauseating humans and demihumans unless a saving throw vs. poison is made.”
Trigger: Being in close combat with troglodytes (hand-to-hand range).
Save: Save vs. Poison. Applies when first entering hand-to-hand range. DM determination on whether the save is made once per encounter or per round.
Effect on failure: –2 to all attack rolls while in hand-to-hand combat with troglodytes.
Affected: Humans and demihumans only. Other creatures (undead, constructs, other reptilians) may be immune at DM discretion.
The stench + surprise combination: A nauseated party fighting at –2 HR is less able to clear the troglodytes before being overrun. The 67% surprise means round 1 is already a full attack round for the troglodytes before the party responds.
Lair Scale #
5d8 lair (up to 40): A troglodyte lair is a significant force. Type A treasure — the richest standard treasure type — reflects that troglodyte lairs accumulate substantial wealth from victims. A lair of 40 troglodytes with Type A treasure represents a major dungeon encounter.
With spellcasters: The RC notes troglodyte spellcasters. With INT 10, troglodytes can fully utilize Cleric and Magic-User abilities. A troglodyte shaman (Cleric spellcaster) in a lair adds healing, buffs, and offensive spells to an already effective ambush force.
Encounter Notes #
The cave ambush: The party moves through a cavern. The walls seem normal — slightly irregular stone, nothing unusual. 1d8 troglodytes are waiting, color-changed against the walls. 67% surprise. Those surprised face a full round of 3 attacks each (2 claws + bite) before they can act. When combat begins, the stench triggers — save vs. poison or –2 to attack rolls. The party is fighting at a deficit in round 1 and cannot easily disengage (troglodytes move 120 ft).
The lair: 5d8 troglodytes (up to 40) in a cave complex, organized with INT 10 tactical awareness. Guards near the entrance (color-changed against walls), a reserve group deeper in, and a shaman. Type A treasure in the innermost chamber. The troglodytes do not just wait to be killed — they have a defensive plan.
CR 3 justification:
- 2* HD = CR 3 base
- 67% surprise rate means most first rounds are free attacks
- Stench (–2 attack rolls) compounds the surprise advantage
- 5d8 lair with Type A treasure makes this a high-value encounter
- Average INT 10 means deliberate tactical use of both abilities
