Signaling (choose type): Successful use of this skill allows the character to leave messages that can only be understood by another Signaling specialist of the same culture, trade guild, military force, or “school.” For instance, one dwarf character with the Signaling skill could pile rocks into a cluster; it would communicate nothing to most characters, but another dwarf character with Signaling would recognize it as a signal and be able to interpret its meaning. When a character takes a Signaling skill, he must specify the type and culture of signals that he will be studying and he must have the opportunity to learn such signals. Appropriate types of signals include military trumpet signals, naval flag signals, smoke signals, drum signals, etc.
🚩 Racial Variants #
| Variant | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarven | Lithic Braille | (Stone-stacking/Engraving) Dwarves use the “Natural” orientation of stones. To a stranger, it’s a rockslide; to a Dwarf, the angle of the top stone indicates the depth of the water table or the proximity of a hostile tribe. |
| Elven | Flora-Folding | (Botanical Signaling) Elves signal by tying living vines into specific knots or “bruising” leaves so they turn a specific color. These messages “die” after a few days as the plant heals, making them perfect for temporary, high-security communications. |
| Halfling | The Hearth-Sigil | (Domestic/Rural) Halflings use “everyday” objects—a tilted flowerpot, a specific color of laundry on a line, or the way a gate is latched. It looks like a messy home to others, but communicates “Safe House” or “Tax Collector in Town” to those in the know. |
| Gnomish | Prismatic Flash | (Light/Mirror) Gnomes use tiny, handheld lenses to pulse light in complex, high-speed sequences. Because Gnomes can process visual information rapidly, they can transmit entire paragraphs in the time it takes a human to blink. |
📡 Technical Variants #
- The Naval Flag-Hoister (Coastal/Maritime)
In the chaos of a sea battle or a fog-choked harbor, flags are the only voice.
- Specialty: Atmospheric Compensation. They can read flag signals even when there is no wind to unfurl them, or when they are tattered by cannon fire. They gain a +4 bonus to interpret signals through heavy rain or fog.
- The Smoke-Weaver (Wilderness/Plains)
Used by nomadic cultures to communicate across vast, flat distances.
- Specialty: Duration & Drift. They can manipulate the “thickness” of smoke using damp herbs. A successful roll allows them to leave a message that stays coherent even in moderate winds, or to “hide” the smoke signal so it looks like a natural brush fire from a distance.
- The Imperial Trumpeter (Metropolitan/Military)
In the roar of combat, the ear is the only way to lead.
- Specialty: Auditory Filtering. They can distinguish their own unit’s specific “call” amidst the cacophony of a thousand other instruments. They gain a +2 bonus to Military Tactics when their unit is using trumpet signaling to coordinate movements.
- The Sewer-Scraper (Metropolitan/Underground)
In the dark, silence is safety.
- Specialty: Olfactory/Tactile Coding. Messages are left using specific scents (oils) or “scratches” on the walls that can be felt in the pitch black. They can “read” a message with their hands while maintaining a Stealth check.
Why other options are incorrect
- ❌ Languages is incorrect because Signaling relies on environmental symbols rather than spoken or written syntax.
- ❌ Mapping is incorrect because it records permanent spatial data; Signaling is for temporary, tactical messaging.
- ❌ Mimicry is incorrect because it aims to imitate nature; Signaling aims to communicate through a code that looks natural but is intentionally structured.
