Art (WIS)

Art: This is the skill of creating art. There are several different types of Art skill (painting, sculpture, woodcarving, mosaic, etc.). The player must specify one sort of art his character practices; a character can take the skill several times and be proficient in several different forms of art. Art skill can be used to improve the reaction of NPCs to the party; if the artist can present an NPC with a portrait or sculpture of that person (and make his Art roll), the artist receives a + 2 to reaction. The player can choose for his character’s Art skill to be based on Wisdom instead of Intelligence.

🎨 Racial Variants #

VariantNameDescription
DwarvenLithic Sigils(Sculpture/Engraving) Dwarven art is often architectural. They can hide secret messages or “builders’ marks” in the geometry of a statue. A successful roll can reveal hidden doors or structural weaknesses in the room where the art is placed.
ElvenLiving Topiary(Horticultural Art) Elves don’t just paint landscapes; they shape them. They can use this skill to create “natural” barricades or beautiful, camouflaged blinds in a forest that provide a +2 bonus to Stealth.
GnomishAutomaton-Aesthetics(Mechanical Art) Gnomes create art that moves. A Gnomish “portrait” might be a tiny clockwork music box that mimics the subject’s favorite song. This grants an additional +1 (Total +3) to the reaction roll.

🗺️ Regional Variants #

  1. The High-Court “Socialite” (Metropolitan/Urban)

In the cities, Art is used for Political Branding.

  • Specialty: The Flattery Filter. When based on Intelligence, the artist can intentionally remove “unattractive” features. On a successful roll, the NPC’s reaction bonus lasts for the duration of the party’s stay in the city, as the NPC’s ego is tied to the masterpiece.
  1. The Frontier “Icon-Painter” (Wilderness/Religious)

In the wilds, Art is used for Spiritual Protection

  • Specialty: Hallowed Imagery. When based on Wisdom, the artist creates icons that soothe the soul. If displayed in a campsite, the party gains a +1 bonus to Morale checks against fear-based effects for 24 hours.
  1. The Desert “Tessellator” (Arid/Waste)

In regions where resources are scarce, art is found in the Geometry of Sand.

  • Specialty: Mathematical Camouflage. They specialize in patterns (Mosaics) that confuse the eye. They can use Art to “paint” a wagon or a tent to blend into the dunes, requiring an Alertness check at -4 for enemies to spot it from a distance.
  1. The Coastal “Scrimshander” (Coastal/Maritime)

Art carved into the bones and teeth of sea monsters.

  • Specialty: Narrative Engraving. They use Art to record the party’s “Legend.” By showing their work to a fellow sailor or merchant, they can substitute an Art roll for a History roll to prove the party’s past deeds and reputation.

⚖️ The “Wisdom vs. Intelligence” Choice #

As noted, the player can choose the base stat. This choice defines the character’s artistic “Philosophy”:

  • Intelligence (The Technical Master): Your art is perfect in its proportions. It is used to impress through Status and Wealth.
  • Wisdom (The Soul-Reader): Your art is perfect in its emotion. It is used to impress through Empathy and Connection

🎭 Synergy: The “Reaction” Loop #

Design Tip: If the artist successfully improves an NPC’s reaction with a portrait, they gain a +2 bonus to all Charisma-based rolls (Bargaining, Persuasion, etc.) with that specific NPC for as long as the NPC possesses the art.
