Detect Deception

Detect Deception: This is the ability to recognize deceptive behavior in an NPC. This does not reveal the truth or falsehood of specific statements, the motivations of the speaker, or the exact nature of the deception. This skill only warns the character to distrust the deceptive NPC. The DM makes the skill roll for the character, informing him of the result. The skill does not work on player characters.

VariantNameDescription
ElvenAura DiscordanceElves sense deception as a “sour note” in a conversation. They don’t look at the face; they listen to the rhythm of the breath. They gain a +4 bonus to detect deception in other Elves or creatures of the Fey, as they are tuned to the specific “harmonics” of their own kind.
DwarvenThe Bedrock TruthDwarves look for “shifting weight.” A liar often fidgets or changes their stance; a Dwarf perceives this as a lack of structural integrity. They are +2 to detect deception during Bargaining or when discussing the quality of materials.
HalflingThe “Gut-Check” InstinctHalflings have a natural radar for “bad vibes.” Because they prioritize comfort and honesty, a deceptive NPC feels physically “chilly” to them. If they fail a check, they can reroll after 1 minute of casual conversation as they “warm up” the target.

Trained on the docks where every sailor has a “tall tale” and every merchant has a “deal.”
