Double-fisted mayhem? Let’s break it down so you can get back to the dice. Here is the “Two-Weapon Combat” cheat sheet, served with a side of steel.
⚔️ The Golden Rule #
If you’ve got a weapon in each hand, you get one extra attack per round.
- The Penalty: Your off-hand swing is shaky. It takes a -4 penalty to hit.
- Mastery Drop: If you use Weapon Mastery, that off-hand strike also functions as one mastery level lower (e.g., Expert becomes Skilled). It never drops below Basic.
🛡️ The “Special Gear” Exception #
Some gear is built for the left hand. If your off-hand weapon is a Cestus, Horned Shield, Knife Shield, or Sword Shield, the penalties vanish!
- No -4 penalty.
- No Mastery level reduction.
- Tusked Shield: This beast is unique. You can’t use another weapon with it, but you get your full number of attacks plus one extra—all with zero penalties.
🤺 The Fighter/Mystic “Stack” #
If you already have multiple attacks from being a high-level badass (Fighter/Mystic), here is how the math works:
- Do your thing: Take all your regular class-based attacks with your primary weapon.
- Add ONE: You only ever get one extra attack for having a second weapon, no matter how many times you swing the first one.
- The Result: A level 24 Fighter with 3 attacks adds a dagger. They now swing 3 times at full power and 1 time with the off-hand penalty.
📝 The Summary Table #
| Off-Hand Weapon | Extra Attacks | To-Hit Penalty | Mastery Penalty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Weapon (Dagger, Sword, etc.) | +1 | -4 | -1 Level |
| Specialized (Cestus, Sword Shield, etc.) | +1 | 0 | None |
| Tusked Shield | +1 | 0 | None |
Pro Tip: If you’re looking for the exact stats on those specialized shields, you can find the Weapon Mastery Tables in the classic D&D Rules Cyclopedia.
