Bravery: With a successful use of this skill, the character can resist the effects of any magical fear. An NPC using this skill successfully can ignore the results of morale checks or of skills such as Intimidation.
⚔️ Racial Variants #
| Variant | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarven | Mountain’s Roots | Dwarves view fear as “mental erosion.” They don’t just resist; they become immovable. On a successful roll, they cannot be forcibly moved or knocked prone by the source of the fear. |
| Elven | Ancient Perspective | Elves see terrors as fleeting moments in a long life. They resist fear through a detached, ethereal calm. They gain a +4 bonus to Bravery checks against any fear caused by Undead. |
| Halfling | Cheerful Ignorance | Halflings have a natural “rebound.” If they fail a Bravery check, they may reroll it 1 round later as they “snap out of it” by focusing on something mundane (like their next meal). |
| Orcish | Blood-Lust Conversion | For Orcs, fear is just unchanneled adrenaline. On a successful Bravery roll, they gain a +1 to hit on their next melee attack against the source of the fear. |
🗺️ Regional Variants #
- The Knight of the High Order (Metropolitan/Urban)
Trained in the rigid codes of chivalry and public duty.
- Specialty: Shield of the Weak. When an NPC ally within 10 feet is forced to make a morale check, the character can make a Bravery roll. Success grants that NPC a +2 bonus to their check, as they are inspired by the character’s stoicism.
- The Frontier “Desperado” (Wilderness/Borderlands)
Hailing from places where life is cheap and danger is a daily neighbor.
- Specialty: Gallows Humor. They have seen it all. They ignore the usual penalties for “Unnatural Fear” (such as from demons or aberrations). They can make their Bravery check even if they are currently surprised.
- The Deep-Tomb Delver (Ancient Ruins/Dungeons)
Trained to handle the oppressive, claustrophobic terror of the dark.
- Specialty: Sensory Focus. They resist fear by narrowing their senses. They gain a +4 bonus to Bravery checks made in total darkness or in enclosed spaces where others might panic.
- The Sea-Steward (Coastal/Maritime)
Bravery born from facing the vast, uncaring power of the ocean.
- Specialty: Eye of the Storm. They are experts at resisting “Environmental Panic” (such as during a shipwreck or a hurricane). A successful roll allows them to perform complex Piloting or Swimming tasks without penalty even while a “Fear” effect is active.
🛡️ The “Moral Anchor” Mechanic #
As per the rule, a successful roll allows a character to ignore Intimidation and Morale checks.
- The “Unshakable” Rule: If a character succeeds on their Bravery roll by 5 or more, they become a “Moral Anchor.” For the next turn, any NPC under their command (see Leadership) automatically passes their morale checks without needing to roll.
⚖️ Synergy with Other Skills #
- Bravery + Intimidation: If a character successfully resists an NPC’s attempt to intimidate them, they gain a +4 bonus to immediately use their own Intimidation skill against that same NPC.
- Bravery + Singing: A character can sing a “Brave Anthem” to grant their Bravery skill modifier to the entire party’s saving throws against magical fear for 1d4 rounds.
