Ascending AC and Armor Value (AV)

Ascending Armor Class (AC) and Armor Value (AV) #

Armor Class is a number that indicates how difficult it is to hit your character.

Crucially, a high AC number is good for a character, and a low AC number is bad.

Your AC is a combination of the type of shield you wear and any adjustments due to your Dexterity score. Your base AC is 11.

  • Shield Bonus: If you are using a shield, add the bonus to your base AC number.

Dexterity Adjustments #

Next, adjust your AC based on your Dexterity score. Consult the “Bonuses and Penalties For Ability Scores Table” to find your modifier:

  • For every +1 bonus listed on the table, add 1 to your AC number (improving your AC).
  • For every -1 penalty listed on the table, subtract 1 from your AC number (worsening your AC).

Remember: A penalty to AC actually lowers the number, making you easier to hit.

Armor Type and Armor Value Table #

AV reduces the damage received in combat. When a character wearing armor is hit by an attack, one point of damage always gets through – from the impact or penetration of the armor. Then you deduct the AV from the damage.
First, find your AV based on your chosen armor type:

Determine Attack Rolls #

An attack roll is a number representing how easy or difficult it is for your character to hit a target in combat.

Making an Attack #

When your character attacks an opponent, you roll a 20-sided die (1d20). This is your attack roll. Add any bonuses from high ability scores (like Strength or Dexterity, as appropriate for the weapon), magical weapons, other factors, and your Hit Roll (HR) bonus.

Compare your final result to the number required to hit your opponent’s Armor Class (AC). If your modified roll reaches or exceeds that required number, you hit your target.
