Combat Casting

Mote: Combat Casting

Description: This Mote represents the trained ability of an arcane caster to maintain concentration and complete a spell despite physical interference. In standard BECMI rules any damage taken during spellcasting automatically cancels the spell and the memorized spell is lost as if cast. Combat Casting introduces a graduated resolution system that gives trained casters the opportunity to preserve or complete their spell despite interruption.

Note: This Mote is available to Magic-Users and Elves only. Clerics resolve spellcasting interruption through their Prayer mechanic. Bards and Skalds have no interruption protection and must rely on positioning and party support to avoid being struck during casting.

Acquiring and Ranking: Uses the standard Mote system and Class Skill rules.

Standard BECMI Reference: Without this Mote, any damage taken during spellcasting automatically cancels the spell. The memorized spell is lost exactly as if it had been cast. This rule remains in effect for all casters without Combat Casting regardless of level or ability scores.

The Formula #

When an arcane caster with this Mote takes damage during spellcasting, roll d100 against the following target number:

(CON + INT + Mastery Bonus) – (5% per Spell Level) – (Damage Taken this Round)

Knowledge Arcana may be substituted for INT when calculating this formula. Use whichever value is higher — the character’s INT score or their current Knowledge Arcana skill value.

Success Thresholds #

Total Failure: If the attack incapacitates speech or hand mobility the spell is automatically lost and removed from memory. No roll is made. This reflects the standard BECMI interruption rule and applies regardless of Mastery rank.

Spell Saved: If the roll falls at or under the adjusted percentile the spell fails to cast but the memorized spell is preserved. It remains available for casting in a subsequent round.

Successful Cast: If the roll falls at or under half the adjusted percentile (round down) the spell is successfully cast despite the interruption.

Mastery Bonuses #

Mote RankBonus %
Cantrip+0%
Charm+15%
Incantation+30%
Enchantment+50%
Grand Mote+80%

Example

An Incantation rank caster (+30%) with CON 14 and INT 16 attempts to cast a 3rd level spell after taking 10 points of damage:

  1. Base Percentile: 14 (CON) + 16 (INT) + 30 (Mastery) = 60%
  2. Penalty: -15% (Level 3 spell) – 10% (Damage taken) = -25%
  3. Adjusted Percentile: 35%
    • To preserve the memorized spell: Roll 35 or lower
    • To successfully cast: Roll 17 or lower (half of 35, rounded down)

Design Notes #

The 1% per HP damage penalty is intentional. A Magic-User taking 20 damage in a single round loses 20% from their adjusted percentile — significant but not automatically catastrophic for a trained caster. This reflects the physical and mental shock of being struck mid-cast rather than a purely mathematical interruption.

At Cantrip rank the +0% bonus means the formula relies entirely on the caster’s raw CON and INT scores minus spell level and damage penalties. This represents a novice attempting to cast under fire using willpower alone — possible but unreliable. At Grand Mote rank the +80% bonus reflects a master caster whose trained reflexes and mental discipline make spell interruption genuinely difficult to achieve.
