Universal Score Modifier Table #
Applies to STR · DEX · CON · INT · WIS — except where noted
These are the standard adjustments applied to various rolls and numbers throughout the game. A higher ability score produces a bonus that adds to attack rolls, damage, saving throws, and skill checks; a lower score imposes a penalty. Charisma uses its own extended table shown below.

Intelligence — Language Use #
Literacy and additional languages known
| Score | Language & Literacy Ability |

| 3 | Has trouble speaking, cannot read or write. |
| 4–5 | Cannot read or write Common. |
| 6–8 | Can write simple Common words. |
| 9–12 | Reads and writes native languages (usually two). |
| 13–15 | Reads and writes native languages, +1 additional language. |
| 16–17 | Reads and writes native languages, +2 additional languages. |
| 18 | Reads and writes native languages, +3 additional languages. |
| 19–20 | Reads and writes native languages, +4 additional languages. |
| 21–23 | Reads and writes native languages, +5 additional languages. |
| 24–27 | Reads and writes native languages, +6 additional languages. |
Dexterity — Initiative Adjustment #
Modifier to individual initiative rolls

Dexterity also adjusts missile attack rolls and Armor Class using the Universal Modifier table above.
Charisma — Reaction & Retainer Table #
NPC reactions, maximum retainer count, and retainer morale
Charisma affects how NPCs react to the character initially, how many retainers (hirelings) the character can attract, and how loyal those retainers remain. High Charisma leaders can maintain larger and more devoted followings.
