Mote: Knowledge Arcana — The Science of Magic
Description: Knowledge Arcana represents deep understanding of magical theory and practice. It functions as a trained substitute for Intelligence in magical contexts, improving over time through rank investment and synergizing with other Motes throughout the system.
Acquiring and Ranking: Uses the standard Mote system and Class Skill rules.
Skill Check Mechanic: Knowledge Arcana may substitute for INT whenever an Intelligence check is required for a magical task. The skill bonus is added to the caster’s base INT score for the purpose of these checks. A caster with INT 17 and +2 Knowledge Arcana bonus uses an effective score of 19 for all magical Intelligence checks.
Magical Engineering Synergy: #
A character who already possesses the Magical Engineering General Skill before learning this Mote gains a +1 bonus to their Knowledge Arcana score at Cantrip rank, reflecting their existing foundational understanding of magical devices and principles.
Magical Engineering (General Skill): The ability to recognize the basic principles of unfamiliar magical devices. Allows recognition of most common magical items on a successful skill roll. Does not include practical training in design or fabrication of magical artifacts, recognition of uncommon magical items, or distinguishing trapped or cursed items from safe ones.
Cantrip Rank — Foundational Knowledge #
This rank establishes the core ability — Knowledge Arcana may now substitute for INT in any magical context including creating magical items, learning new spells, and all other Intelligence-based magical tasks throughout the Mote system.
Magical Engineering Bonus: Characters with the Magical Engineering General Skill gain +1 to their Knowledge Arcana score at this rank.
Meditation Synergy: When combined with the Meditation Mote any Intelligence bonus from Meditation also applies to the Knowledge Arcana score for the duration of the meditative bonus.
Charm Rank — Arcane Recovery #
Skill Bonus: Knowledge Arcana score increases by +1.
Arcane Recovery: After a minimum of 4 hours of uninterrupted rest the caster may recover spent memorized spells from the previous day’s memorization. The total spell levels recovered equals one quarter of the current Knowledge Arcana score rounded up. Only spells of 5th level or below may be recovered. Recovered spells must be from the previous day’s memorized selection — no new spells may be chosen.
Example: A caster with INT 17 and +1 Charm rank bonus has a Knowledge Arcana score of 18. They may recover 5 spell levels (18 ÷ 4 = 4.5, rounded up to 5) from their previous day’s memorized spells of 5th level or below.
Meditation Synergy: If the Meditation Mote is at Incantation rank or higher a meditation period may be used for Arcane Recovery. The Intelligence bonus from Meditation does not apply to the Knowledge Arcana score for this purpose.
Incantation Rank — Spell Mastery #
Skill Bonus: Knowledge Arcana score increases by an additional +1, cumulative with Charm rank.
New Spell: The caster learns Counter Spell (3rd level Magic-User spell) as a known spell. It may be memorized normally from this point forward.
Spell Reshuffle: The caster may spend one hour re-studying their spellbook to replace currently memorized spells with other known spells of the same level. This does not consume the replaced spells — it is a reorganization of daily memorization rather than new learning.
Enchantment Rank — Advanced Arcane Recovery #
Skill Bonus: Knowledge Arcana score increases by an additional +1, cumulative with previous ranks.
Arcane Recovery — Improved: The 5th level cap on Arcane Recovery is removed. The caster may now recover spent memorized spells of any level from the previous day’s memorization. The recovery amount remains one quarter of the current Knowledge Arcana score rounded up.
Spell Reshuffle — Improved: When re-studying the spellbook the caster is no longer restricted to previously memorized spells. Any known spell from the spellbook may be selected during the reshuffle regardless of whether it was memorized the previous day.
Grand Mote Rank — Spell Mastery #
Skill Bonus: Knowledge Arcana score increases by an additional +1, cumulative with previous ranks.
Spell Mastery: After 8 hours of study the caster selects one 1st level spell and one 2nd level spell from their known spells. These two spells may each be cast once per day at their minimum effect without expending memorized spells.
Example: Magic Missile selected as the mastered 1st level spell may be cast once per day producing a single missile without consuming a memorized spell. The spell functions at its absolute minimum effect regardless of caster level.
Note: The once per day free casting resets after 8 hours of study. The selected spells may be changed during the study period — the caster is not permanently locked into their choice.
