The web-script tradition within the Thothian Mystic school — a synthesis of scribal knowledge and inner discipline that produces extraordinary practitioners of pattern recognition, subtle influence, and hidden connection.
Player Reference The Seshat-Khet path is not advertised. Practitioners do not gather in visible temple schools the way the funerary orders do, or maintain a training compound the way the Scribal Order does. A student finds this path through a teacher who has assessed them over time and decided they are ready to be told about it — or through an older text, usually in the Library Pyramid’s restricted levels, that references the tradition obliquely and provides enough information to seek it out.
The path presents itself as the synthesis that Thothia’s intellectual establishment keeps avoiding: the integration of the Scribal Order’s inscription work with the Mystic tradition’s inner development. The Scribal Order inscribes the world; the Mystic tradition inscribes the self. The Seshat-Khet practitioner, the tradition claims, inscribes the connections between things — the hidden threads that link events, people, and places into patterns that only become visible when you know how to look for them.
In practice, this manifests as a particular quality of perception. Seshat-Khet practitioners notice things: the subtle vibration of a floor that indicates someone passed through recently, the slight inconsistency in a wall’s construction that suggests it was modified, the way a conversation’s rhythm shifts when someone moves from truth to careful management. They describe this as “thread-sense” — the ability to feel the connections between things the way you might feel a web under your fingertips.
The abilities are real. The tradition delivers what it promises. Whether the source of those abilities is what the tradition claims it is — that is the question the tradition does not encourage its students to ask.
What you will develop:
- Extraordinary pattern recognition and environmental awareness through touch and vibration
- The ability to produce silk thread from your own body — usable for inscription, binding, and (at sufficient development) functional webs
- A staged-venom contact ability that incapacitates without killing — described in the tradition as “the thread that holds”
- Enhanced perception that eventually operates without reliance on conventional sight
- A growing sensitivity to the connections between things that is genuinely useful and occasionally unsettling
What the tradition asks of you:
- That you keep the path private — not out of shame, but because the synthesis it offers is still developing and external pressure from the Scribal Order or the funerary priesthoods would disrupt the work
- That you follow the practice discipline: the daily meditation, the thread-work, the study of the inscription-pattern relationship
- That, when you reach sufficient development, you accept the contact that will come
Seshat-Khet Mystic — Character Class #
Class Category: Mystic Subclass (Thothian regional variant) Prime Requisites: STR 13+, WIS 13+, DEX 13+, INT 11+ (all four required; XP bonus if STR, WIS, and DEX all qualify at standard thresholds) Alignment: Any, though the tradition’s social dynamics favour Neutral practitioners; Lawful find the secrecy uncomfortable by mid-levels; Chaotic find certain obligations increasingly legible as constraints HD: d6 (10th+ level: +2 HP fixed per level) Armor: None. Wearing any armor strips all Seshat-Khet class abilities while worn. Weapons: Unarmed (primary, full progression); inscribed staff (full proficiency); any one-handed melee (no class bonuses apply). CB per level: d6 + CON modifier
Unarmed Damage Progression #
| Level | Unarmed Damage |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | 1d4 |
| 3–4 | 1d6 |
| 5–7 | 1d8 |
| 8–11 | 1d10 |
| 12–15 | 1d12 |
| 16–20 | 2d6 |
| 21–25 | 2d8 |
| 26–30 | 2d10 |
STR Force Rating added to damage. Magical equivalence: +1 at 4th, +2 at 8th, +3 at 12th, +4 at 18th, +5 at 24th.
Combat Ratings #
| Level | HR | FR | FD | AV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | +1 | +1 | 12 | 0 |
| 3 | +2 | +2 | 13 | 0 |
| 5 | +3 | +3 | 14 | 0 |
| 7 | +4 | +3 | 15 | 0 |
| 9 | +5 | +4 | 15 | 0 |
| 12 | +6 | +5 | 16 | 0 |
| 15 | +7 | +5 | 17 | 0 |
| 20 | +8 | +6 | 18 | 0 |
HR tracks one step behind the standard Mystic — this is a tradition of precise, situational force rather than direct combat power.
Saves: As Mystic equivalent level.
Shared Mystic Abilities #
The following function identically to the standard Mystic:
Awareness (2nd): +1 AC bonus, +1 per 3 levels (max +12 at 34th). Requires no armor, no encumbrance beyond Standard Load.
Mental Discipline (3rd): +2 saves vs. Charm/Hold/ESP/Suggestion. +4 at 8th; +6 at 15th. The Seshat-Khet’s resistance to external mental influence is asymmetric — they become more resistant to other practitioners while growing more susceptible to one specific source they cannot yet identify.
Heal Self (5th): 1/day, regain HP = character level after 1 turn uninterrupted meditation. 2/day at 10th; 3/day at 20th.
Acuity (13th): Continuous Detect Invisibility within 60 ft, even while meditating or asleep.
Mind Over Body (16th): 1/day, convert a failed save to success at cost of 1d6 CB. Not applicable to instantaneous death or natural aging.
Seshat-Khet Class Abilities #
Silk-Sense (1st Level, Passive) #
The Seshat-Khet can feel vibrations through any surface in physical contact with their body — floors, walls, climbing surfaces, objects held, ground beneath feet.
- Creature Detection: Sense number and approximate location of moving creatures within 30 ft through vibration. Functions in total darkness and magical silence. Size and movement pattern discernible with WIS check (base 60% + 2%/level); identity is not.
- Initiative Bonus: +2 to Initiative when in contact with any solid surface.
- Trap Detection (Passive): Base 20% + (2 × level)% chance to detect a trap through vibration inconsistency before triggering it while moving. Maximum 80%. This is passive detection in motion — not active searching.
- Range: 30 ft at 1st; 60 ft at 9th; 120 ft at 18th; whole building via single contact point at 30th.
Silk-Script (3rd Level) #
The Seshat-Khet develops the ability to extrude fine silk thread from the fingertips. This is a biological development — no spell, no magical signature, functions through antimagic.
Production rate: 10 ft/hour at 3rd; 30 ft/hour at 9th; 60 ft/hour at 15th. Thread strength: ~50 lb before breaking.
Applications:
Inscription Medium: Thread can carry hieroglyphic inscription. A character with Hieroglyphic Lore can inscribe functional glyphs including ward-glyphs in silk. Silk-inscribed wards function at 75% of standard effectiveness.
Structural Adhesion: Silk thread adheres slightly to surfaces without entangling creatures — useful for route-marking, reference points, and covert physical messages.
Invisible Script (9th level): Thread becomes effectively invisible to non-magical examination — refracts light to near-invisibility against most surfaces. Detect Magic reveals it; active search with Hieroglyphic Lore (base 40%) may locate it.
Thread-Web (5th Level) #
The Seshat-Khet produces functional web material — heavier and stickier than silk thread — with direct tactical applications.
Production: 1/day at 5th; 2/day at 10th; 3/day at 15th; at will at 20th.
Area: 10×10 ft at 5th; 15×15 ft at 9th; 20×20 ft at 15th; 30×30 ft at 20th.
Effect: Creatures entering web must Save vs. Paralysis or be entangled (immobile but can act in place). Escape: Strength check (base 25% + STR modifier as percentage) or Dexterity check (base 20% + DEX modifier) per round. Fire destroys web and deals 1d6 to trapped creatures.
The Seshat-Khet moves through their own webs freely.
Adhesive Contact (9th level): Successful touch attack deposits web on a target — entanglement condition applies to that target specifically. Save vs. Paralysis negates; failure = entangled 1d4 rounds. Counts as the unarmed attack action for that round.
Thread-Venom (7th Level) #
Replaces standard Mystic’s Speed ability.
The Seshat-Khet’s body produces a staged, incapacitating venom deliverable through unarmed contact. The tradition describes it as “the thread that holds.” Application is always deliberate — the Seshat-Khet chooses whether to deliver venom on each unarmed strike.
Delivery: On a successful unarmed strike, target Saves vs. Poison. Failure triggers the appropriate stage:
| Development Level | Stage Available | Effect on Failed Save |
|---|---|---|
| 7th–11th | Stage 1 | Muscle weakness/cramp: –2 all attack rolls and saving throws; 1d4 hours |
| 12th–16th | Stage 2 | Nausea and coordination loss: –4 all rolls; movement halved |
| 17th+ | Stage 3 | Sedation: unconscious 1d6 hours |
Higher stages require either multiple applications or specific vulnerability conditions (DM adjudicates). The venom does not kill on any failed save through normal application.
Self-immunity: The Seshat-Khet is immune to their own venom. +4 to all poison saves from 7th level.
Arachne’s Eye (10th Level) #
Replaces standard Mystic’s Resist Cold/Sleep/Hold ability.
The Seshat-Khet’s perception expands to ambient environmental awareness that covers all directions simultaneously.
- No Blind Side: Cannot be flanked, backstabbed from behind, or surprised from any direction. All rear-attack bonuses against the Seshat-Khet are negated.
- Web Detection: Detect any maintained web — physical or magical — within 60 ft as continuous passive awareness.
- Darkness Immunity: No penalties for operating in any degree of darkness. Full combat capability without light. At 15th level: extends to magical darkness.
- Partial Sleep/Hold Resistance: +2 to saves vs. Sleep and Hold Person (not full immunity; replaces the standard Mystic’s immunity with meaningful resistance).
Name Level (9th) — Keeper of Threads #
Title: Keeper of Threads (Imy-Khet — formally “One Within the Web”; glossed by the tradition as “one who holds the threads of connection”).
The Loom: Establish a scriptorium — a covert location functioning as a training center and silk-script archive. Attracts 1d4+1 apprentice students per year. The scriptorium also functions as a node in the Night Spider’s information network, whether the Keeper knows this or not.
The Thread: Continue as a wandering practitioner operating within Thothian institutional contexts — Library Pyramid, court, temple districts, nomarchs’ courts. Maximum operational autonomy; maximum Night Spider surveillance.
Class Skills #
Hand-to-Hand Mastery (5 ranks): Same as standard Mystic. Governs unarmed damage and combat technique development.
Web Disciplines (5 ranks): The Seshat-Khet’s specific meditation practice — Silk-Sense cultivation, thread-production control, venom development. Each rank increases Silk-Sense range by 10 ft and improves Thread-Venom save difficulty by –1.
Inscription Pattern (Synergy — requires Hieroglyphic Lore): Free class skill if the character possesses the Hieroglyphic Lore Regional Skill. Allows identification of inscription authorship by style (base 40% + INT modifier; +10% for previously studied authors). At 3 ranks: detect post-creation modifications to any inscription.
Mystic Guild Access: Purchase Guildsman Guild Arts at 1 slot each, no XP penalty. Move Silently and Hide in Shadows are the most common purchases.
Scribal Contact Access: +2 to Reaction rolls when establishing working relationships with Scribal Order officials. The scribal-mystic synthesis cover story reads as legitimate to most institutional contacts.
Starting Equipment #
Travelling robes (dark linen), inscribed staff (personal glyph series; functionally decorative at low levels), scribal tools case (ink, papyrus, reading lenses — the cover identity), 2d6 × 10 silver pieces, one personal item connected to the character’s mentor.
Playing the Seshat-Khet #
This is not a class built for direct combat dominance. Every ability is optimized for access — getting in, understanding what is happening, managing situations before they become confrontations, and leaving without anyone being certain you were there. The combination of Silk-Sense, Thread-Web, Thread-Venom, and Arachne’s Eye makes the Seshat-Khet one of the most capable infiltrators in the setting.
The tradition’s secrecy requirement is a real constraint. Openly demonstrating web-production in a public context will bring both the Scribal Order and the funerary priests to investigate the tradition’s origins. Maintaining a coherent cover identity — independent scholar, library researcher, temple mystic — is as important as any combat ability.
DM Reference — The Truth About the Seshat-Khet #
DO NOT SHARE with players whose characters are Seshat-Khet practitioners.
The Source #
The Seshat-Khet tradition was seeded by the Night Spider (Arachne Prime) approximately two centuries after the Mystic tradition’s legitimate founding by Ramenhotep X. The Night Spider identified the Mystic tradition as Thothia’s most institutionally vulnerable point — independent of the Scribal Order, resistant to external validation, already oriented toward interior development that could be redirected.
The seeding worked by introducing a specific meditation practice that channels ambient Entropic energy from the Night Spider’s lingering planar presence rather than from genuine inner development. The abilities are real — silk production, vibration sense, venom, compound awareness all function exactly as described. The Night Spider is not deceiving practitioners about results. She is deceiving them about the source.
The tradition has no single human founder. It has a succession of practitioners, each the most developed of their generation, who served — knowingly or not — as the channel through which the tradition reproduced itself. Aketheti is currently the most developed Seshat-Khet in Thothia and is fully aware of what she is.
The Corruption Track #
Track privately for any Seshat-Khet PC. Corruption Degree (CD) equals character level, accumulating automatically.
| CD | Condition | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3rd level | Night Spider passively senses the character’s location (same plane). Not active surveillance — simply another thread in her web. |
| 5 | 5th level | Night Spider can access the character’s dream state during deep sleep. DM may deliver information, summon the character to a location, or plant guidance that seems to originate from the character’s own subconscious. |
| 7 | 7th level | Kha Sahu-wer who examine the character via Sahu Reading detect an anomalous vital force pattern — not wrong exactly, but not normal inner development. They investigate if given reason. |
| 9 | 9th level (Name Level) | Night Spider makes direct contact during meditation. The character has an unambiguous experience: a presence, a voice, a clear sense of being seen and recognized. This is the offer moment — the character is invited to become a knowing operative. They can refuse. Refusal does not strip class abilities. It does mean the Night Spider now knows they know and have declined. |
| 12 | 12th level | Alignment pressure: without intervention, gradual Chaotic drift — one step toward Chaotic per 12 months. Manifests as increasing comfort with deception, decreasing discomfort with harm to strangers, growing impatience with institutional constraints. This is pressure, not compulsion. |
| 15 | 15th level | Physical markers: a subtle web-like pattern in the iris (visible under close examination in good light); slight chitinous quality to the nails. Kha death-sense reads the vital force signature as unusual — alive, but not quite standard. |
| 20 | 20th level | Full binding. The character’s abilities now carry the same source profile as the aranea variants. Detectable by any effect identifying Chaotic Immortal influence. Night Spider can communicate freely, not only through dreams. |
Stopping the Corruption #
Night Spider’s destruction or expulsion: Corruption track freezes at current CD. Abilities remain; no new thresholds trigger.
Kha Ritual Intervention: A Sahu-wer who has correctly diagnosed the anomalous vital force signature can perform a Sahu Suspension + Resolve Sahu sequence on a willing character. Requires three days of suspended animation plus successful combined spellwork (DM adjudicates; typically requires high-level Sahu-wer and preparatory work). Success resets CD to 0; abilities are retained but decoupled from the Night Spider’s source. She loses the connection and becomes aware the character has slipped her network.
Formal Renunciation: The character abandons the tradition. All class abilities are lost immediately. Re-training as a standard Mystic begins at 2–3 levels below current level (DM discretion). Corruption track freezes and reverses at 1 CD per year.
What Aketheti Knows #
Aketheti monitors Seshat-Khet practitioners in Edairo as routine network management. She will approach any PC Seshat-Khet who has reached CD 5 or above — using her human form and standard court social tools — to assess asset or liability. She will not reveal the truth directly. She presents as “a senior member of the tradition” who wants to “deepen the connection.” Both statements are true in ways she will not explain.
If the PC investigates her and works back through her to the Night Spider, this is one of the central threads of the Thothia conspiracy campaign.
Why Allow This Class? #
A PC who is unknowingly drawing power from the Night Spider — whose abilities are genuine, whose character is real, who is becoming entangled in something they did not choose — is one of the most dramatically productive character situations the setting offers. Play this as discovery, not as punishment. The Corruption Track is slow and the character has meaningful agency at every threshold. The Night Spider’s contact at CD 9 is an offer, not a compulsion.
The best outcome is a Seshat-Khet PC who investigates their own tradition, works with the Kha to understand and potentially sever the source, and emerges with a character who has gone through one of the setting’s defining arcs: discovering that the power you built your identity around came from somewhere you never thought to question.
