Lingering Effect Motes: Enhancing Spell Duration and Impact

This ability extends how long a spell’s effects last and makes saving throws less frequent or more difficult to achieve.

Penny Rank (Delayed Saving Throw)

  • Rule: When this mote is applied to a spell, if the target is granted a saving throw at the beginning of their turn to end an effect, they must instead wait until the end of their turn to make that save.

Baccara Rank (Duration Increase: Short Spells)

  • Rule: Any spell with a base duration of under 5 turns adds 1d4 turns to its duration (rolled at the time of casting).

Sovereign Rank (Increased Duration Die)

  • Rule: Any spell that requires a die roll for its duration (e.g., 1d4 rounds) increases the die to the next size (d4 becomes d6, d6 becomes d8, etc.). This improvement can apply to spells from previous ranks, but the spells must be re-learned with this mote applied.

Ducat Rank (Duration Increase: Medium Spells)

  • Rule: Any spell with a base duration between 6 and 10 turns adds 1d4 turns to its duration (rolled at the time of casting). As with other re-learning rules, previously learned spells can gain this benefit if the caster spends the necessary time and penalties to re-learn them with the mote.

Crown Rank (Day-Long Permanence)

  • Rule: The magic-user can re-learn any 1st to 3rd-level spells that do not have an instantaneous or permanent base duration to have a permanent effect for the entire day.
  • Limitation: A caster can only have a maximum of three spells active with this mote at any time. Casting a fourth spell with this mote applied will immediately cancel the very first of the previously cast Crown Rank effects.

Synergy Effect:

  • If the magic-user also possesses the Crown Rank in Agility Training, they can temporarily “table” one Crown Rank spell effect when casting a second, allowing two of the three slots to be ready at once, though casting a third still cancels both prior tabled effects.
